چکیده
Short-radius centrifugation is a potential countermeasure to long-term weightlessness. Unfortunately, head movements in a rotating environment induce serious discomfort, non-compensatory vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and subjective illusions of body tilt. In two experiments we investigated the effects of pitch and yaw head movements in participants placed supine on a rotating bed with their head at the center of rotation, feet at the rim. The vast majority of participants experienced motion sickness, inappropriate vertical nystagmus and illusory tilt and roll as predicted by a semicircular canal model. However, a small but significant number of the 28 participants experienced tilt in the predicted plane but in the opposite direction. Heart rate was elevated following one-second duration head turns. Significant adaptation occurred following a series of head turns in the light. Vertical nystagmus, motion sickness and illusory tilt all decreased with adaptation. Consequences for artificial gravity produced by short-radius centrifuges as a countermeasure are discussed. © 2001 P u b l i s h e d by E l s e v i e r Sc i ence Ltd.

The phenomenon of light @ashes (LF) in eyes for people in space has been investigated onboard Mir. Data on particles hitting the eye have been collected with the SilEye detectors, and correlated with human observations. It is found that a nucleus in the radiation environment of Mir has roughly a 1% probability to cause an LF, whereas the proton probability is almost three orders of magnitude le...

The paper reviews the research that has been undertaken to understand and quantify the disturbance e ects of the astronaut’s motion inside and outside the spacecraft on the vehicle’s attitude and acceleratory environment. In early investigations, the dynamic interaction of astronauts, modeled as point masses, and the spacecraft, modelled as a rigid body, was analyzed. Through ground-based exper...

We illustrate a three-dimensional mathematical model for the prediction of biological processes that typically occur in a sea region with minor water exchange. The model accounts for particle transport due to water motion, turbulent diffusion and reaction processes and we use a fractional-step approach for discretizing the related different terms. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper presents a new discretization method for the computation of the orientation workspace of 6DOF parallel manipulators, de®ned as the set of all attainable orientations of the mobile platform about a ®xed point. The method is based on the use of a modi®ed set of Euler angles and a particular representation of the orientation workspace. In addition, the projected orientation workspace is...
